Athansius Schaefer: Temple of Portunus

The rectangular Temple of Portunus dates from the Republican period in the 2nd century B.C. The Tiber flows nearby and this temple was dedicated to the god of rivers and ports. Also known as the Temple of Fortuna Virilis, it was saved for posterity when reconsecrated as a Christian church in the Middle Ages.
