Athansius Schaefer: Castel Sant'Angelo

The massive fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo takes its name from the statue of the Archangel Michael in its summit. It began in AD 139 as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum. The Vatican corridor that leads from the Vatican Palace to Castel Sant'Angelo was built in 1277 to provide an escape route when the pope was in danger.
